Introduction:
As part of improving customer experience, Hughes is now offering Download Manager as a tool that allows you to manage and control when content can be downloaded to your PC.
Procedure/Solution:
General Information
Download Manager: Provides a tool that allows you to schedule downloads to take place during specific times and take advantage of the Hughes Download Zone without impacting their Fair Access Policy limits. The Download Manager can be accessed by going to http://services.hughesnet.com and then clicking on the Download Manager link.
Download Zone: Between 2:00 AM to 7:00 AM Eastern Time the HughesNet subscribers, especially customers who have been subjected to FAP, can schedule the downloading of automated updates or other large files within this time frame with a download manager. The data downloaded during this period will not apply towards their service plan download threshold. You can access more information in Download Zone by going to the HughesNet Download Zone site.
Managing Downloads:
- HDM can be used to manage several types of downloads:
- Schedule during the Download Zone- schedules the download of the file to occur during the Download Zone which eliminates the risk of exceeding yours download threshold.
- Download now using the Download Manager - This will download the content immediately.
- Download now using your browser - This option bypasses the Download Manager, the download will be managed by the browser or browser add-on.
Note: Using the options the Download Now using the Download Manager or Download now using your browser may increase the chance of being exceeding the download threshold. When selecting these options, you will get the following reminder message:
- By default, the Download Manager ignores files smaller than 10 MB, allowing the browser to download the file immediately.
If a file is larger than 10MB, the New Download window will automatically open
- You have the ability to drag and drop any file to the Download Manager DropBox for download. These files will be handled by the Download Manager, regardless of the size (+/- 10MB) - The following popup will appear to select the Download Method.

- You can use the Ignore files smaller than option to set the size of a file which will trigger Download Manager to schedule a download at the appropriate time.
- If you want the Download Manager to download files smaller than 10 MB, you must right click the file, select Download with Download Manager from the drop-down menu.
- By selecting an option other than Scheduled may result in the HughesNet Fair Access Policy (FAP) being invoked.

- The downloaded files are saved at the following default location
Typically the Download Manager will be minimized in the System Tray. Customers can right click on the Download Manager icon or the DropBox and select Show Main Window. An explorer window will open showing the downloaded files.

To remove the DropBox off the screen:
Right click on the DropBox and uncheck the DropBox selection from the menu
Note: If you want the DropBox back, right click on the system tray icon and choose DropBox
- Can I use the Download Manager with my anti-virus software?
It is recommended that you configure the HughesNet Download Manager to use your anti-virus software. This can be configured in the Download Options.

- The scheduled download did not start
You must be logged in for Download Manager to work properly. The Download Manager application will close when you logs out of your account. If you are logged off, Download Manager will not download any content. You must leave you computer on during the scheduled download time. It is fine if the PC is in Screen Saver or Energy Saver mode.
- I cannot download flash files
The Download Manager cannot download flash files or some video game files. In the case of flash video and flash based games, Download Manager will usually download the file but you will not be able to view it locally because the source does not provide a file extension. This prevents the PC from finding the correct application to view the download. These types of files are unsupported.
- The download failed - what can I do?
If a download fails, a red box will appear showing it failed. Right click on the red box and select either Restart Download or Resume
- My PC is running slow
If you computer is sluggish, check if any downloads are in progress (image below). You can pause the download and resume it later or cancel.

- When an item is downloaded, where does the file go?
Typically the Download Manager will be minimized in the System Tray. You can right click on the Download Manager icon or the DropBox and select Show Main Window. An explorer window will open showing the downloaded files.
The download files are saved to the Download Manager default directories. To see the location or open the directory where the file was saved.
