How can I check to see if my system meets these requirements?

Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Use Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic Tool - a utility included with DirectX 6.0 or higher - to get information about the system. To access this information tool, please do the following:

  1. From Windows, click on Start -> Run.
  2. Type dxdiag.
  3. Click OK.
  4. If dxdiag does not come up, or if an error message is received, the latest version of DirectX may need to be downloaded and installed. Go to www.microsoft.com/directx to download and install the latest version of DirectX.
  5. Once DirectX is opened, a list of information in the box labeled System Information will be displayed.
    • Operating System - Exact Operating System and version number.
    • Language - Language the Operating System uses.
    • Processor - The type of processor, or CPU, in the system. Pentium III or higher is required. If you have DirectX 7.0a or higher, there will also be a number, in MHz. This number is the speed of the processor.
    • Memory - The amount of RAM installed in the system. A minimum of 128 MB RAM is recommended.
    • Page file - The amount of space on the hard drive has available for loading and running programs. This number is determined by the amount of hard drive space you allow Windows to use for swap file space. By default, Windows allocates this space automatically according to the hard drive space.
    • DirectX Version - The exact version number of Microsoft DirectX that is currently installed on the system.

These areas are the most important for determining system specifications. Other areas that may be of interest to you are the Network tab for determining networking problems as well as the More Help tab that gives step-by-step general troubleshooting for DirectX related problems.

  6. At the main system information, click on the Display tab. Once you select this tab, the following screen will appear:

From the Display tab, you will see information on the Video Card and the driver version number this card uses. Another important part of this tab is the middle section showing DirectX Features. You must ensure that both DirectDraw and Direct3D Acceleration are in the Enabled state. If not, you should click the Enable button. If the button is not available, please contact the Video Card manufacturer for further help with getting the Video Card properly recognized by DirectX.

Note: If you have a secondary 3D card, such as a 3DFX Voodoo 1 or Voodoo2 card, or if there is more than one Video Card installed in the system, you will have a display 1 and a display 2 listed. Follow the instructions for each of the display tabs.

  7. You acquire information on the Sound Card in a similar manner. Clicking on the Sound tab should result in the following screen:

This tab shows the Sound Card name and driver version number. There is also a slider in the DirectX Features that allows for you to decrease the amount of hardware acceleration for the Sound Card. This is most helpful in the event of losing sounds or having sound related problems.

    Check System Information Via Documentation
Other than using the DXDIAG tool, the next best way of determining the system information is to simply refer to the documentation that came with the computer, or contact the computer manufacturer. For example, you will most likely need to contact the system's manufacturer to find out the specifications of the CD-ROM drive.

    Available Hard Drive Space
To make sure the system has enough free hard drive space to install the game as some games may require up to 1 GB of free space on the hard drive. To check this, please follow these steps:

    • From Windows Desktop, double-click the My Computer Icon with the LEFT mouse button.
    • Using the RIGHT mouse button, click on the C:\ Drive.
    • LEFT click on Properties.

You should see the screen below. The pink area, labeled Free space, is the amount of free hard drive space you have on the system. In addition to the amount of space needed to install the game, you will need an additional 100mb free on each of the hard drives, regardless of where you install the game. For example, if you install the game to a secondary hard drive, you will still need at least 100mb free on the primary drive (C:\) to install DirectX and to allow for proper Windows operation.

How important are the minimum system requirements?

Minimum requirements

Games have specific requirements in order to run smoothly (i.e., Direct X 8.0 Compliant 3D Accelerated Video Card, Open GL Driver). If your system doesn't meet the Game Specific System Requirements you may have problems playing the game that are completely unrelated to the Game Player.

Back to Top of FAQs

What do I do if the game crashes or fails to load?

Prompted to insert the correct CD-ROM when starting a game.
The technology used to deliver the game online essentially tricks the computer into believing the game is already installed and the CD is in the drive. Please reboot the computer and try playing the game again. If this problem persists, please contact technical support.

The screen turns black or quits back to Windows.
There are several things you can try to fix this problem:

  • Shut down any other applications that you may have running on the system such as screen savers, virus scanners, etc.
  • If you are using a processor which is faster than a Pentium 233, you may need to turn down the video hardware acceleration. (See the next question below on Turning down Windows video hardware acceleration.)
  • Update the Video Card drivers. (Please see updating drivers section below)
Game freezes or locks up while playing.
Windows video hardware acceleration may need to be turned down if the game you are playing uses some other form of acceleration, such as DirectX. To turn down Windows video hardware acceleration:
  • Right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
  • Click on the Performance tab
  • Click on Graphics
  • Move the slider bar one notch to the left
  • Click on OK
  • Click on OK once more to exit the system properties panel
Now try your game. If you still have problems, repeat this process until the game works or you can't turn acceleration down any further. If you have video hardware acceleration turned all the way down, and the game still won't run, you may need to turn off DirectX acceleration instead.

Computer freezes or crashes in the game's action phase.
The most frequent reason for freezing and crashing in the games action phase is outdated or incorrect drivers. Please see updating drivers section for help with updating the Video Card drivers.

Freezes or crashes with drivers supplied by the Video Card manufacturer installed.
You will most likely have better luck using the drivers for the chipset on that Video Card.

This can cause problems when the Video Card company creates drivers that overwrite and change the drivers created for the chipset. Because there are so many different Video Cards available, and only a few different chipsets, it is easiest and often most reliable to create software that works best with the chipset. This allows for our games to play well on most all Video Cards that have these chipsets.

If you experience freezes or crashes, or if you are having any video problems, we recommend that you first try updating the drivers to the most recently available from the manufacturer Video Card. If you continue to experience these problems, contact the Video Card manufacturer for information on the Video Card's chipset and contact that company for updated chipset drivers, often called reference drivers.

Note: We cannot provide support for updating drivers. Most drivers include instructions in the form of a web page or a readme file that should help you with the installation. If you have questions about the installation of drivers, you should contact the component's manufacturer.

What do I do if audio or video performance issues arise?

General sound problems
If you don't hear any sound, chances are that you just need to turn up the volume knob on the speakers, or by using the Windows volume control panel. To use the Windows volume controls, just double click on the little yellow speaker icon on the taskbar. Make sure that the mute check box is not selected.

If you are sure that the volume controls are already turned up, then make sure that you don't have any other programs running that may be using the Sound Card.

Sound playback in the program is choppy, scratchy, or distorted.
This can be caused by problems with the Sound Card (please refer to the updating drivers section) or by latency in the network connection, which is determined by several factors:

  • The cyber distance (the path of servers or hops the data takes to get to its destination on the Internet) to game servers
  • Volume of traffic on the Internet
  • Planned or unforeseen regional or national network outages on the Internet
  • The modem speed
  • Another important factor that affects the quality of the connection is 'lost packets' -- data that gets lost during transmission over the Internet.

The game runs too slow.
This can be caused by latency. It may also be caused by the performance of the computer system (please refer to the System Requirements section for more information on computing requirements).

A good way to improve speed is to obtain the latest drivers for the Video Card. Video card manufacturers are constantly improving the software drivers that run their Video Cards to fix problems and improve performance. If you have not updated the drivers recently, a newer, faster driver is possibly available.

The game play is choppy.
Slow or choppy game play speed - If you notice slow or choppy game play, or if you move the mouse and a few moments later you get an on-screen response, the problem may be your 3D accelerator.

Graphic glitches or peculiarities
General graphical issue: Anything from strange colors to no color, static effects to blurry images. Any graphics related glitches or peculiarities that appear on the screen during the game are Video Card related. Updating Video Card drivers most often solves these issues. See the updating drivers section for more information on updating Video Card drivers for the system.

How do I handle error messages?

This program has performed an Illegal Operation and will be shut down.
These errors occur when Windows encounters a problem that it can't fix. Quite often, the problem is the result of a conflict between the game and some other program that you have running on the computer. The best solution is to shut down any other applications that you may have running before you play any games.

ROPE.Proxy.1: Error calling LoadServciesDescription method: Invalid SSL Server Certificate, etc.
This is caused by the date/time being incorrect on the computer. To change the date, simply double click on the time displayed at the bottom right hand corner of the monitor and click the correct day on the calendar. Or, open Date/Time in Control Panel and to change the day, click the correct day on the calendar.

DirectSound or Dsound.dll Related Errors
Sound problems are most often related to either outdated or incorrectly loaded Sound Card drivers, or incompatibilities between Sound Cards and DirectX. Please see the updating drivers section below.

Updating Drivers

  1. The first step is to ensure you are using the correct sound device in the system. If you are unsure of which Sound Card you have, check the system specifications under Windows. Go to the Start Menu and select Run. Enter dxdiag and click OK (this should give you the computer's diagnostics), or review the computer's documentation, or contact the computer manufacturer.
  2. Usually, if you are missing certain sounds, such as gunshots or footsteps, but all other sounds are normal; the Sound Card is not able to run the game with full hardware acceleration. To solve this issue, run dxdiag and click on the Sound tab. Move the slider for Hardware Acceleration back and forth once or twice, and then click OK. Once you reload the game, you should hear all sounds.
  3. If you continue to experience sound problems, please ensure you have the most recently updated DirectX / DirectSound compatible Sound Card drivers from the Sound Card manufacturer.
  4. If necessary, obtain and install the latest DirectSound drivers for the Sound Card. This is usually done by visiting the manufacturer's website, or contacting their technical support for help updating drivers.
  5. Once these drivers have been downloaded and installed, reinstall the version of DirectX that is installed on the system. To do this, from Windows, click on Start then select Run, and type D:\directx\dxsetup (where D:\ is the letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive).
  6. The latest version of DirectX can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com/directx.

Are LEGO games compatible with Windows Vista?

What LEGO games will and will not work with Vista is largely ad-hoc and heavily dependent on the hardware configuration of the particular PC.

In the mean time Windows Vista has a very useful tool you can use to get a LEGO game running under Microsoft's new OS.

Called programmed compatibly wizard, it can be found by heading to Start, selecting Control Panel, (ensure you are in Control Panel Home), then Programs and select Use an older program with this version of Windows. You'll find this in the Programs and Features section.

It's useful to note that you can use the compatibly wizard to make any problematic LEGO installer work as well using it with a game causing you problems post installation.

Once you've started the wizard and selected the LEGO game you may want to install a game you have previously installed. You get to choose which OS compatibility mode you want the game or installer to run under. It is suggested that you select XP SP2.

Once you have selected the compatibility mode in which to run that program, with a bit of luck everything should spring into action. After running the program, the wizard will check to see if it ran successfully. You can now choose between three options, one of which is to accept what you did as ok, one to try again and another to give up entirely.

Hopefully, the LEGO installer or game worked fine, and when the first option is selected, and an invitation to send some temporary files containing the compatibility setting you'd used to get the program to work will be displayed.

Using the wizard you can also manually change the setting of an existing LEGO game you have installed. Locate the program file, right-click on it, select Properties from the pop-up menu and then click on the compatibly tab. You'll find all the compatibly mode settings in there including the option to choose the OS program will think it's running under.
