What is an IP address?
An IP address is a unique identifying number used by the Internet. There are two major types of IP addresses, Static and Dynamic. A Static IP address is one that is always the same, while a Dynamic IP address can change anytime you send information over the Internet.
Computers connected to the HughesNet modem are typically configured to use the DHCP server in the modem to acquire IP address from the range previously assigned to the HughesNet device. Dynamic IP addresses require less planning because addresses are assigned as needed by network devices. Leased dynamic IP addresses typically expire.

What is a Dynamic IP address?
Most service providers offer services that use dynamically assigned IP addresses to communicate with the subscriber equipment. When the HughesNet system is installed, the terminal is assigned an IP address range by a DHCP server on a leased basis. Periodically, these leases expire and another IP address has to be requested and assigned to a VSAT terminal.

What is a Static IP address?
Static IP addresses are typically assigned to devices permanently. This can be done manually or through DHCP just like the dynamic IP address. Most publicly available websites are assigned static IP addresses that are associated with web sites or other serviced based on DNS entries. Users type in a common language name for a site they want to visit. DNS converts the common language request to an IP address. The request is then sent to the IP address and the results sent back to the requestor.
A Static IP address gives you the convenience of knowing that every time you connect, you will have the same IP address. Some software and services require you to have a Static IP address in order for them to work properly. This includes VPNs, Remote Connection Software, Web Servers, FTP Servers, registering a domain, Pinging your computer, and many more.
